Supermarkets are set up to sell! Yes, there is a method in the organization of those aisles upon aisles, and the method helps make grocers wealthier.

One secret is to shop the middle of the supermarket. Displays on the outside walls of supermarkets are beautiful: fresh produce, deli products, and tables of delectables. But, you can usually find the same types of items on the center aisles for less. Just because things come in can, jars, or boxes, doesn’t mean they are less good, but they are certainly less expensive.

  • Buy cheeses from the dairy case, not from display tables. There may be fewer types of cheeses in the dairy, but the basics types like cheddar, mozzarella, and Monterey Jack are as usable.
  • Fresh meat and fish look great in the case, but go to the frozen food bin. Here frozen fish and frozen meats are as healthy and cost much less.
  • Pasta in the organic section seems more unusual and healthy, but pasta in the pasta aisle is just as good and costs less. For that matter, organic doesn’t really deliver what it costs. Hormone free milk is not much different from regular milk that is also controlled and is hormone free. Free-range labels on eggs do not mean chickens are free on the farm; they may only have the ability to move in a little concrete areas.
  • Bread in the aisles may not smell like the bread at the bakery, but it is as good and costs less.

Go to bulk buy areas in the store and buy bulk items for less. You can also find store brands in the aisles which are less expensive. Buy bulk oatmeal rather than in single servings, and buy store brand cereals and add your own raisins.

These tips will help you save. But, also take a list that has been made after an inventory at your house so you won’t buy what you don’t need or buy on impulse. Also take a calculator so you can add up your costs as you go along.

To be a good shopper, you need to be aware so become a saavy grocery shopper. For more information about saving on groceries, also see Pennypinchinghints’ article: “Grocery Shopping Can Be Less expensive.”
