By Air
- Travelocity has great air fare rates. Go to Travelocity.com to save 20% or more on air fare. Check out FareCompare.com also to track costs of air routes and to receive emails alerts on fare changes.
- You can sometimes get better deals off line. Travel agencies often affiliate with large travel companies that deal with airlines in volume sales and can get the best fares. Also check out your Sunday newspaper section for great deals.
- Buying directly from some airlines can be the best way to get the best price.
- One-way tickets are very expensive. You can actually buy two round-trip tickets for the price of a one-way ticket. Just use one half of each.
By Car
- Get an E-Z Pass or Fastrak pass. Not only do these passes offer discounts of up to 50 cents per toll, but you also save on gas by avoiding lines and not stopping and starting.
- Consider renting a smaller car or a hybrid for traveling long distance to save on fuel.
- When you rent a car, you should not automatically pay for rental insurance. Usually your own car insurance covers you, and you can save your pennies.
- Think about driving for free.
- Check out Paidride.com which will allow you to drive a new car or your own for free—as long as you sport their advertisement.
- You can also be an RV courier. RVs have to be returned to their origination spots, and you can be paid to do it. See Roadrat.com.
- Driveaway companies do the same thing with cars. You can be paid to drop off cars anywhere across the country.
By Bus
Bus travel is cheap. It’s also comfortable and safe—especially safe when driving many miles tires you out.
- Try local bus transportation to save wear and tear on your car and lower your fuel cost from stop and start driving.
- Use sidestep.com to compare fares and routes for longer distance travel by bus.
- Remember that Europe has a great bus system for seeing the countryside and going from city to city. It’s cheap and fast.
Hotels
- Take advantage of hotel loyalty programs. The programs themselves are free and offer a fourth night free for staying three nights. You can receive other perks like free continental breakfast and upgrades. Some loyalty programs will offer reduced rates as well.
- Get as much as 50% off at Priceline.com for hotels. You give them your arrival and departure dates and the grade of room you want with a bid. They’ll find you great prices. (But, you won’t know where you are staying until you pay.)
- Expedia presently also offers Unpublished Hotel Rates where you can save up to 50%! Get the deal now and hotel name after you book Expires – 12/31/10
- Always ask what the hotel is offering for discounts. You’ll be surprised what they offer that they don’t advertise.
- Consider staying at a mom and pop motel. Small mom and pop motels may not have the name and the glamour, but they are often clean and have better rates. A bed is a bed and a bath tub a bath tub.
