GoodGuide.com has now rated over 75,000 products you buy at your grocery store. These ratings are based on whether or not the product is healthy, has a good environmental impact (like ecological decomposition), and is made and sold in ways that match your social values (like better worker pay).
Did you know that men’s grooming products may contain neurotoxins, some sunscreens have an active ingredient that becomes carcinogenic when exposed to sunlight, and some children’s shampoos may have skin irritants? With GoodGuide, you can make better shopping choices and save your heath and the environment. The site does not just point out the bad; it also offers good alternatives. Ratings range from 0 to 10, 10 being the best, and there are choices along the way. GoodGuide is also trying to sync with grocery stores’ inventories so that with its iPhone application you can stand in a store and locate the better products. You can also tell which products are truly green, and not depend on labeling that may be misleading.
Penny Pinchers are savvy shoppers and buy better, not only to save pennies but also to save their health and the environment.

We just started using GoodGuide for all of our groceries. We analyzed the cost the first week (details here: http://talesofgoodness.com/2011/05/31/spend-responsibly-goodguide-your-groceries/) and it cost us an additional 7.4% to buy the “good” (i.e. socially responsible) brands – a total of $7.84. We didn’t have time to plan around sales or discounts, so we pretty much paid full price for everything. We think we can do better as time goes on. Either way – totally worth it.
