Snacks at the grocery stores are some of the most expensive food items. Make your own.

  1. Make your own trail mix by stirring up nuts, dried fruits, cereal, pumpkin or sunflower seeds, and chocolate bits. Use before games. They are much cheaper than store-bought.
  2. Make mini-pizzas on bagels and freeze.
  3. Make burritos and store in freezer bags to go right to the microwave.
  4. Have a family cook out—but cook in, having everyone make a favorite snack to freeze for later.
  5. Try buying pistachios as a healthy snack. You get 100 calories per 30 nuts, and pistachios help reduce the bad cholesterol (LDL).
